Alumna of the Women’s Leadership Institute take part in a retreat at Spirit in the Desert Retreat Center in Carefree. The retreat featured dynamic Jewish learning classes, an interfaith panel discussion and leadership-development courses. The retreat was funded in part by the Jewish Community Foundation of Greater Phoenix.

Facing a cancer diagnosis with four young children, Knight felt a strong urge to connect with the Jewish community. She called the nearest Reform synagogue. As it happened, the synagogue’s membership director answered and told her that they ran a breast cancer support group. She invited Knight to come meet with them that evening.

“It came to my attention that on certain boards of our community women are underrepresented,” says Rabbi Elana Kanter, director of the Women’s Jewish Learning Center in Scottsdale. “I really believe that our strength as a community depends very much on having enough women in leadership roles, together with men. To have women underrepresented in our day and age is not good for anybody, … it’s not good for the whole Jewish community.”

A new yearlong leadership training program for women will launch this year as a result of a collaboration between The Women’s Jewish Learning Center (WJLC) and PJ Library.
The Women’s Leadership Institute (WLI), developed and led by Rabbi Elana Kanter, WJLC director, is designed to train a new cohort of communal leaders by providing a formal leadership training curriculum and matching the women with mentors.

The Women’s Jewish Learning Center in Scottsdale will hold a “Make ‘em Magical!” Jewish holiday webinar about Hanukkah at 8 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 7. The webinar is for young parents and will teach how to make home celebrations meaningful.
Future webinars will focus on Tu B’Shevat, Purim, Passover and Shavuot. Cost is $75 for series or $25 per session.
